Two methods to make Green Beans Thoran Kerala style |Beans Poriyal|Beans stir fry with ground coconut |Onam Sadya Special

Which name pops in your mind if asked ,a character (in Comics/Sitcoms/Movies) with a vegetable name ?

Well,the only one my brain can think of is "Mr.Bean" :D..Well,if you ask me he is like the Charlie Chaplin in color to me ...I still love watching Mr.Bean with my nephews and other kids of my relatives ...I love Mr.Bean . So,do I love the Mr.Bean of the vegetable kingdom ,"Green Bean".

For your info,Green Beans are full of vitmains,minerals,dietary fibers and anti-oxidants .So,it is good to make it a part of any meal of the day. There are various ways to cook green beans .However,the recipe I love to make often are my Kerala specials ...and it is one of the famous side-dish/dry dish in the Onam Sadya .

I am gonna tell you how to make an easy peasy Green beans thoran (Thoran means stir fry made with ground coconut in Malayalam ),something that you can make  in a jiffy but will be simple yet yummy with plain rice and curries or even chapattis.


Easy Green Beans thoran (2 methods)

Ingredients

  • Green Beans - 250 gm
  • Onion,medium - 1 no.
  • Green Chilly - 2-3 nos.
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
  • Coconut,grated - 1/2-3/4 cup
  • Coconut oil - 1-2 tablespoons
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Dry Red chilly,broken - 1-2 nos.
  • Curry Leaves - A few
  • Salt to taste

Method 1



NOTE  :In this recipe,you may need 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and 1-2 teaspoons of red chilli powder , onions/shallots - 1-2 nos. only ,plus rest ingredients above.(green chilli for recipe and broken red chilli while tempering are optional)

Method 2 - (exactly as per the above ingredients list)

  •  Wash and trim the beans to remove the strings from the sides using a knife from the top to the bottom.This will ensure the beans will be easier to chop and cook faster and more softer.
  • Chop the beans,onions and green chillies into small pieces and keep it aside.
  • In a pan,add the coconut oil and splutter the mustard seeds followed by the broken red chillies.
  • Add the chopped beans , green chillies ,onions and turmeric powder,give it a stir.
  • Add a tablespoon of water and make a heap .
  • Cover them with the lid and allow it to cook/steam on low flame till cooked.(5-10 minutes approx)
  • In between keep checking and stirring to avoid sticking to the bottom.
  • Once all water evaporates and beans and onions gets cooked,add the grated coconut and curry leaves to it.
  • Keep on stirring on low flame for a minute or two.
  • Add salt to taste.
  • Mix everything well.
  • That's it easiest Beans thoran is ready to be served.

Note:
  • Coconut oil gives the dish the authentic Kerala taste.Any other oil can also be used.
  • Don't over cook the beans while steaming otherwise it'll lose color and flavor.
