Fat is not bad for our health - Good fat vs Bad fat

"FAT" is a word that is too scary to think of,dream of,swallow or digest ~ for me ! Don't you wish this fat-ty word didn't exist at all . I did ! Wonder what would have happened if there was no such thing called fat at all - well, whole world would have been filled with happy women dancing on happy feet -slim and trim ,men wouldn't look ever pregnant ,kids would eat non-stop pizzas, pasta, ice creams and chocolates etc etc ..and the most important thing there won't be any disease at all and we all will be happy and healthy ever after....

Hmm..sounds like one of my best dream and yes that much I am scared of fats...

However,we NEED fats !! Guess what I found out - That our body needs little fat for sure ! Fat is not something to be eliminated entirely from our diet . Fat is in fact very important for our body :
  • Fat is a major source of energy .
  • Fat helps in absorbing some vitamins and minerals - Vitamin A,D,E and K - the fat soluble vitamins .
  • Fat keeps our skin soft and hair healthy .
  • Fat derived from food produces the "essential" fatty acids required by the body called linoleic acid (Omega 6) and linolenic acids (Omega 3 ) which our body, neither can make by itself or can function without it.These essential acids helps in the formation of healthy cell membranes, nervous system, brain development, hormone production, healthy immune system, controlling inflammation, blood clotting, blood pressure, liver function, cholesterol etc etc..
  • Fat helps in regulating our body temperature and keeps it warm
  • Fat also forms a protective layer for different organs in the body -it holds them in place and prevent them from any injury .

DID YOU KNOW ? - A human brain is nearly 60 percent fat !

So just like carbs,we do need fat in our diet and body BUT they are of two types - Good fats or Unsaturated Fats and Bad fats or Saturated fats and obviously, we should aim for the good fats in our diet to make sure that even if we are dieting to lose weight ,our body is not deprived of any essential fat benefits .

Good fats are of two types :
  1. Monounsaturated Fats (MUFA) - are fats or oil that are in liquid form at room temperature but starts to solidify when chilled. Examples -Olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil. Other than oil they are also found in dairy products (whole milk),Red Meats,Nuts, olives,Avocados ,popcorn, whole grain wheat, oatmeal, cereals etc..
  2. Polyunsaturated Fats (PUFA) are also like monounsaturated fats except their chemical structure, liquid in room temperature but gets solid in refrigerator .They are more solid though and may even get spoiled when kept chilled.Heat and oxygen are more damaging to this type of unsaturated fat.
Monounsaturated fats and Polyunsaturated fats are also known as "OMEGAS". Mononunsaturated fats are also called Omega-9 fatty acids like Canola and Sunflower oil etc whereas Polyunsaturated fats are called Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids .These are essential fatty acids that our body is incapable of producing it by its own and so should be derived from apt food sources like fish, flax seeds, oils etc...
Bad fats are of two types :
  1. Saturated Fats - are usually solid in room temperatures .They come mainly from animal sources like meat and whole fat dairy products ,baked and fried products and plant based oils like Palm oil, coconut oil . Saturated fats are considered to be one of the main cause of high cholesterol levels, heart attack or stroke.
(Unlike other saturated fats,Coconut oil has about 90% saturated fat but when taken sparingly also helps in raising good cholesterol !)

The Academy of nutrition and dietetics recommends to get no more than 7% to 10% of calories from saturated fats.

    2. Trans Fats - Natural trans fats occurs in small quantity in animal products -meat and dairy products .However, there is the artificial trans fat created in industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid .These oils are affordable to produce, can be used many times for frying etc,has longer shelf life and also gives food a good taste and texture. Because of these properties these oils are the most sought after oil by restaurant owners.

However, trans fats are the most harmful fats that can reduce good cholestrol/HDL and raise the bad cholestrol/LDL leading to heart diseases and even diabetes ,cancer etc etc..So,this type of fat is suggested to be taken carefully .Even lots of restaurants have been and are banning the use of this deadly oil.

So,basically the monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats should be our go to fats (within limits) and saturated fats should be taken sparingly but should not be avoided and just say NO to Trans fats !!

The U.S Department of Agriculture 's dietary guidelines recommend that adults should get 20%-35% of their calories from fats.

Now,let's see what are some good fat foods that we must consume and bad fat foods that we must avoid :

Monounsaturated Fats Polyunsaturated Fats Saturated Fats /Trans fats
Canola Oil Sunflower Oil Butter
Olive Oil Corn Oil Lard
Peanut Oil Safflower Oil Poultry with skin
Almond Oil Sesame Oil Red Meat
Walnut Oil Soybean Oil Whole fat dairy products (even 2% milk)
Avocados Cottonseed oil Palm oil
Olives Fish Oil Partially Hydrogenated oil
Peanut Butter Nuts and seeds Coffee Creamer
Almond Butter Walnuts Vegetable shortenings

Tofu Readymade frostings/icings

Making wise choices while consuming fat,not only helps in keeping unnecessary weight off but also helps in warding off many deadly diseases like heart attack, stroke, diabetes, cancer etc etc and live longer healthily and happily.

It is not good to be fat but fat is good !! - hmmm not scary anymore ,knowledge is power - full !!

Take care,

Carbs - Good or bad for health ??

That's what I thought!

When it comes to diet or weight loss ,one thing that scares me the most and I wish I could stay away from them, other than fats are "Carbs". Like fats, even carbs are expected to be kept in range.

Carbs/Carbohydrates provides fuel a.k.a energy to the body ,derived from foods like fruits, vegetables, breads, rice, pasta and dairy products that boost stamina, concentration, mood, recovery and overall well being.

Now they are of two types :Good Carbs and bad carbs .The good carbs are not well known to all but bad carbs have over taken the former and given the carbs overall a bad reputation!

Good carbs are those that contains lots of fiber like vegetables, fruits and whole grains which takes longer to break down into glucose and provide the essential nutrients along with the calories which will curb appetite, will build up stamina for any physical activities, fast recovery from any training session, sharp mind and mood.

Bad carbs are processed or refined foods that strips off fiber ,adds extra sugar like white breads,Rice,Pasta,Cakes,Cookies,Donuts,Bagels etc that can spike the glucose level in the body and develop diseases like Diabetes, heart disease etc.

So,obviously we must include good carbs in our diet to lose weight in a healthy way. So,here is the list of good carbohydrates that will help in weight loss and can be a part of an optimum diet.

By the way,did you know that plain "Popcorn" is actually a whole grain and it's high in antioxidants. 3 Cups of air popped plain popcorn = 110 calories and 4grams of fiber, which covers one of the daily requirement of whole grains. Aaahaa..I like that !

Portion Control-What the heck is that and how the heck it should be done ?

portion-size
Portion control !
If you ask me what is the full form of DIET  ? I would say it is - Did I Eat That !!!!

That soft cake with a chocolate frosting, that Pizza with all your favorite toppings, those new flavors of vanish-super-fast-in-the mouth ice creams ,that lip smacking chicken biryani, that non stop finger licking paneer curry ,that 70 MMmmmmm dosa, those deep fried samosa filled with green peas and potato stuffing etc etc etc...Man!! How the heck am I suppose to have just a portion of it ????...A.K.A,In a more formal language or medical or health terms -"Portion Control" .

Well, when I was little I ate entire portion of the plate,if not more (Ohh come on peeps,I mean whateva food served in it ) ..No one taught me to control my portions! When I grew up ,still I felt it was unfair to eat just a portion of food (I hate partiality you know - United we stand..err eat!).Infact ,I had no idea there is something called portion control , I believed in ,"Life is too short ,just enjoy to the fullest-without any ifs and buts."

However, gradually,my body was so (filled with) jealous of my philosophy that it started to camouflage like a balloon at times -sometimes inflated, then deflated, then inflated and inflated and inflated a tad more, that it started throwing signals in the form of many physical discomforts and torturing my wardrobe to hoard clothes of different sizes day by day.

But I must say,I didn't gain weight just because of non-stop eating - to be frank I eat normal (my mom would say - like a bird (ok EXCEPT anything that is sweet),there were lots of health issues that contributed to weight gain. So,my doc is taking caring of my health issues but he recommended I must take care of my lifestyle as well -you know the usual we hear everywhere-eat right, drink more (I mean water),exercise your butt off ,at least don't be a couch potato blah blah blaaah..

Diet plays a vital role in our overall well being .And portion control plays a vital role if we wanna lose weight aptly and to keep it off.

Portion control ,the name explains for itself - Nevertheless, portion control works by controlling the amount or portion size of food consumed in a day ,which has a right balance of essential nutrients and calorie ,thereby reducing overall calorie intake without compromising health, reducing weight and keeping it off .

In short,Portion control = Calorie control = Weight control !

We are fortunate enough to live in an information era ,where we can self-educate with convincing evidence how to measure the right amount of food to eat in a day, plan our daily menu accordingly and stay within our calorie requirement range ..Rest,our weighing scale, mirrors, selfies, medical reports will gradually speak for itself ;)..."Positively!"

I recently came across portion control reference guide online and also in a few health magazines ,that made sense and was quite helpful. So,I created one with all best info from all and thought of sharing with you all as well. This reference will guide you how much different kinds of food items ,we should consume in a day aptly:

portion-control-guide

I also came across this new plate method of portion size that was quite informative as well.It also made sense. They say ,always serve in a small plate which will give the impression that the plate is full and your are having sufficient food.

Did you know - A 8-9 inch plate can hold up to 800 calorie foods ,10 inch plates = 1000 calories,11 inch = 1600 calories,12 inch = 1900 calories approx .Imagine if you fill that plate ,how many calories will go in and what will be the after effect?

That's why now there is also a portion plate method that makes sure that we eat the apt food with apt calories only. Here is my plate planner guide  :

portion-plate-guide

Other Points to remember :
  • Drink lots of water for sure.It will keep the hunger off, flush out toxins from the body and you may eat less.
  • According to a research, choose plates that have a color contrast to the food you are eating as a main course.
  • Don't eat any food while watching TV especially packet size products like chips, snacks etc.Study shows that one tends to eat more because of the distraction.
  • While eating out -Order an appetizer as your main course or share an entree or take half to go (parcel it baby) and stop eating when you are full, sip water before and in between to do so.

Need more motivation to control portion/calorie/weight -well,just eat in front of the mirror "NAKED" (Oh my !! don't stare hard though ,I get all the symptoms of mini heart attack !)

With lots of love (without any portion control here),
