How to make rainbow popsicles at home

rainbow-popsicle

After all those articles on good health - nutritional info on fats, proteins, carbs, fiber blah blah blaah ,it is time to take a break -how about a cool break !Oh Yeah - Ice ice baby !!

Well, this summer's highlight was this rainbow Popsicle. It was my way of capturing the colors of summer in this Popsicle and not only that, it was also my way of having ice pop in a healthy way . Yep ,I used different homemade fruit juice plus a sports drink as I loved that color and it was impossible to get that color otherwise and moreover the sports drink had lots of vitamins, minerals etc in this and since I used it moderately ,it qualified under being kinda healthy .

It is so fun to make Popsicle at home.I used to always think before I made a real homemade ice pop that ,it is not that easy to make an ice pop and it can never be healthy.I thought the ice lollies are laden with some kind of heavenly sherbet always.

Reminds me my childhood days, how I and my bro would wait for the summer break and the ice pop /barf ka gola from the Popsicle vendor with the ice cream cart .The sound of that bell ringing in his cart would sound nothing less than a bell at any temple. It was that soothing to our little ears. It was not something my parents encouraged us to buy but somehow they agreed for once in a while .My favorite ice pop used to be in orange color (damn,I am drooling!) and my brother's ,he was fine with any color.

Anyways, off to my rainbow ice pop ,I didn't even use a special ice mold instead I used a glass .

So,this is how I made a rainbow popsicle at home :

 RAINBOW POPSICLE

Ingredients
Watermelon juice - 1 cup
Pineapple juice - 1 cup
Strawberry juice - 1 cup
Kiwi juice - 1 cup
Orange juice - 1 cup
Sports drink,aqua - 1 cup

Method: It is better to see than read steps to make . Please watch my video that will show you how I made this layered beautiful rainbow Popsicle at home :)

Whenever fall/autumn is near , I am in a denial mode that summer is gonna over soon and I get that irk to make something that screams it-is-still-summer and this Popsicle is my sunshine :).

Fiber optimal - Good sources of dietary fiber !

dietary-fiber-joke
Tug of war !

Where did you hear the word "Fiber" for the first time ever in your life ?? Let me guess, most probably in science class. Well, not me though.Yeah probably, I was sleeping or day dreaming about all the useless stuffs of this world than fiber optimal.

I heard "fiber" for the first time in my life ,when my mom caught me red handed ,trashing my lunch box secretly and I remember my hair going "Kramer" and she yelling at the top of her lungs (remember the lady in "Tom and Jerry cartoon") ,to eat greens by hook or crook and the lecture - they are full of fiber and nutrients blah blah blaahhh...

And then she started conspiring how to make me eat greens by all green-y means. Her favorite one was by making a Kerala special curry called "Aviyal" which is nothing but a mishmash of vegetables together with a ground coconut paste and she used to take full advantage of this opportunity ,fill it with every vegetables she could ,so that I have no choice but to eat it and since she would expect me to frown ,she certainly made different side dishes alongside .That was the beginning of my theoretical knowledge about dietary fibers but it was the practical knowledge that enlightened the true importance of fiber - " The Constipation ".

Since I was little I had a troubled relationship with the toilet ( *Veil on my face!*) . We saw each other not regularly . It became the hot topic in my family . It was high time they said. When my mother's food-y tricks wasn't working on me ,I was dragged to see a doctor .As if mom's ,dad's lecture and my bro's taunting and teasing wasn't enough ,even the doctor's first question to me was ,"Are you taking enough fiber ?"

Since then and every now and then my body keeps on reminding the resounding question at bass mode ,"Are you taking fiber optimal/enough ?"

So,even though my ears are still ringing with examples of fiber from mom and doctors ,I was not entirely sure about what exactly fiber is and the different types of fiber and the foods rich in fiber. So,this is what my research says all about fiber :

What is fiber/dietary fiber?

Dietary fiber simply means bulk or roughage meaning the indigestible part of plant foods that is not absorbed by the body but just passes through our digestive system, absorbing the water ,detoxing the digestive system and easing out the bowel movements and waste products out of our body.

The word fiber comes from the latin word ,"fibra" meaning string/thread/filaments/entrails.

Good sources of fiber includes :
  • Whole Grains
  • Beans and legumes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fruits and vegetables
Importance of fiber in our diet and for our body :
  • Fiber aids in proper digestion and prevents constipation .( Tell me about it !)
  • Fiber adds bulk to the diet ,making us feel full ,keeps hunger at bay .
  • Fiber helps in weight control.
  • Researchers have found out that for every 7g of fiber consumed on a daily basis, the stroke risk is cut down by 7%.
  • Fibers like psyllium husk helps in getting rid of yeast and fungus from the body which then prevents from skin breakouts/acnes etc and promotes a glowing skin in and out.
  • Fiber provides relief from Irritable Bowel Syndrome ,Hemorrhoids and diarrhea.
  • Fiber helps in regulating sugar and thereby reduces the risk of formation of gall stones and kidney stones in the body .
  • Fiber helps to control cholesterol and heart diseases.
 Types of fiber :
  1. Soluble Fiber : The fiber that dissolves in water .When these fiber pass through our digestive system, they absorb water and gets fermented by the bacteria and becomes gel kind. For examples, fruits, vegetables, pulses, oats, barley etc
  2. Insoluble fiber : The fiber that doesn't dissolve in water or change it's form while through the digestive system. For example :Wholegrain cereals and wholemeal bread etc ..
Our body needs both kinds of fibers as both of them have their own health benefits .

The recommended daily intake of fiber is 25 g for women and 38g for men.

However,it is advised by the nutritional experts that fiber should be added to our diet gradually ,otherwise too much fiber quickly may lead to excessive gas, bloating and cramps . Slow but steady...

I made a list of food sources that is rich in fiber which will surely guide me to take the right amount of fiber everyday :

Foods rich in protein -All about protein

If you have been following my previous posts about carbs, fats etc etc-all health related topics, you will agree with me simply or is secretly swearing me in your head, that I am such a nutrition illiterate freak (Yes I am :D) and so ,you are not gonna be an ounce surprised, if I tell you up until now I had no idea what are proteins ,why do our body need protein ,how much protein we need to eat and Which food contains the apt number of protein for healthy consumption .

Well, the pious time has arrived ,all my healthy stars are getting aligned it seems- and today we are gonna learn all about - Protein the great !!

So,the question is what is a protein -what is it ?

Protein is one of the three (other two are Carbohydrates and Fats) main or macro nutrient essential for the proper development and functioning of the body . Proteins are made up of small compounds called Amino acids .Our body needs upto 22 amino acids ,of which 9 amino acids cannot be produced by our body which are called "essential amino acids" which must be taken from healthy foods .

Animal proteins like meat, dairy and eggs contains all the essential amino acids and so they are called "complete proteins".On other hand, plant based proteins like beans, grains, nuts etc may not have all the required essential amino acids and so they are called "incomplete proteins".(There are exceptions nowadays like Quinoa,Amarnath etc).In which case, the diet needs to be adjusted in such a way that the optimal amount of protein is achieved by the body by the apt combination of proteins spread through out the day ,which is called "complementary protein".

Now,the question arises why do we exactly need protein for?

Every cell in our body contains protein.
  1. Protein helps in boosting metabolism in our body.
  2. Reduces appetite ,keeps us full and energized.
  3. Helps in weight loss especially belly fat.
  4. Builds muscle mass and strength .
  5. Supports neurological functions - keeps our moods upbeat .
  6. Repairs cells and makes new ones.
  7. Boost immunity.
  8. Keeps blood sugar steady.
  9. Helps in the proper functioning of tissues and organs.
  10. Promotes proper growth and development in infants, teenagers, elderly people and pregnant women.
Now,the next question is so how much are we suppose to consume protein daily ?

According to USDA (US Department of agriculture) , the recommended daily protein intake for adults at an average weight and physical activity level is :
  • 56 gm for men per day .
  • 46 gm for women per day.
However, protein should be spread and consumed through out the day  to meet the recommended protein intake than at once or twice because our body can't store protein .So,it only absorbs a little at a time, rest are stored as fat or just eliminated . So ,56 or 46 gm of protein should be distributed over 3-4 small meals more or less in equal proportion and not at once. At the same, too much of protein over the limit can cause other health issues as well.

Now,the main question is what are good sources of protein or foods rich in protein :
Here is the list I prepared that will show the foods rich in protein and their calories and how much they contain protein in grams :
