Cabbage daal

If you are running out of time and you have to make any curry ,which one you would go for ??? Well,if you ask me I would go for a humble,simple and most importantly super duper quick Indian Lentil soup a.k.a our ghar ka daal ....:D....Actually that's the no.1. reason I love them and then comes their super health benefits :P...well,thanks to the one who invented daals ,it's a boon for the lazy me plus it's nutritious ..win-win in every way....Well, a simple humble jackpot for me :P...and it's so versatile and forgiving that it can be turned into different kinds with a simple basic recipe....and lately I am after Cabbage (though not a fan but...),the vegetable so healthy especially loaded with anti-carcinogenic properties/anti-cancer properties and bored of the usual recipes inspired me to cook a daal with purple cabbage in it and no complains, it was the healthiest dose of soup or curry in a hurry............

Cabbage Daal


Cabbage ,shredded - 1 cup
Toor Daal - 1 cup
Onion,chopped - 1/2 cup
Green chilli chopped - 2-3 nos.
Garlic,chopped - 1 no.
Tomato,chopped - 1/2 (optional)
Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Oil - 1 tablespoon
Ghee - 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
Cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon
Dry red chilli - 2-3 nos.
Curry leaves - 1 stalk
Asafoetida a pinch or two

Method :

  • Pressure cook daal with turmeric powder and salt for one whistle or until cooked (as per your pressure cooker's instructions).
  • In a kadai or pan,heat oil ,splutter mustard seeds,then cumin seeds,dry red chillies,curry leaves and asafoetida.
  • Add chopped garlic,green chillies and onion,saute until transparent .
  • Add tomatoes ,saute until soft.
  • Add the shredded cabbage to it and saute a minute.
  • Add the prepared daal to it.
  • Let it boil and then reduce the flame and let it simmer for a few minutes.
  • Put of the flame and pour ghee over itand give a stir.
  • Serve hot with boiled rice or enjoy it as a delicious healthy soup.
