Sukhiyan|Sugiyan recipe - A kerala traditional sweet snack (Quick and easy version)


Sukhiyan/Sugiyan is a deep fried sweet traditional snack of Kerala made with green grams,jaggery,coconut etc .Keralites/Mallu love to eat this snack as a nallu mani palaharam (locally said in Kerala) meaning evening snack, with a hot cup of chaaya /tea ...These sweet snacks hardly anyone can resisit.They are a deep fried snack and also a sweet one and moreover,quite easy to make at home as well.I say Home Run peeps!!

I wonder why they are called "Sukhiyan/Sugiyan" - my wild guess is that they are related to the Malayalam word "sugiyan" which means one who loves to enjoy just the sweetness of life in a lazy and laid back way .Looks like a sweet snack invented by some sugiyan or sugiyati 😁😜 .....Anyways,whoever invented it,kudos - good stuff it is !! Because of the green gram,I find it also tad healthy .

First time I had sugiyan was when I was little and my grandpa/achachan used to bring us packets full of snacks from a nearby shop exclusively for us,grand kids .When everyone at home were excited to see my grandpa back from his walk and leaving everything they are doing and standing up as a mark of respect to him (that is a norm in Kerala),my eyes were all on those oil spilled newspaper crinkled in his hand and the amazing edible aroma it used to spread or may be I could whiff like a dog 😏


How I wished grandpa would hand over that packets filled with sukhiyans to me right away..but alas...he would hand it over to my mom wisely ...And mom used to distribute to everyone including elders...How I hated that !😡...I would pray, at least 3 piece I should get...Sometimes I got,sometimes my paa would give me his share or amma would,bro would never...

Gone are those days,but to rekindle those memories once again,I make this quick and easy version of Sukhiyan at home sometimes..

So,this is how I make this Kerala special dish,Sukhiyan and this is an easy version ...Now that's called "Sugiyan effect"/ "The Sukhiyan syndrome"😉

Sukhiyan|Sugiyan (Quick and easy version)

Mung Beans/Mung Dal/Cherupayar - 1 cup
Jaggery,grated - 1 cup
Coconut,grated - 1 cup
Cardamom powder - 1 Tsp
All Purpose Flour/Maida - 3/4th cup
Rice Powder - 1 Tbsp
Coconut oil for deep frying

For a person like me with horrible sweet tooth ,bigger than Bugs bunny and sometimes a sugiyati ,this sweet snack from Kerala is just perfect to munch...A sweet reminder ,"Life is precious and sweet,take it easy,YO !"
